What we offer our employees

As an organization with a mission to create the best system of housing and support for British Columbians, you’d expect BC Housing to have a strong people-first mandate – and it does. BC Housing has an innovative People Strategy designed to support employees to be the best they can be.

The People Strategy
Competitive compensation and employee benefits
BC Housing employees enjoy excellent comprehensive packages, including top-notch benefits and one of the best pension plans in the country. We also recognize that people have outside responsibilities. Along with a vacation allowance, the Modified Work Week gives the majority of our employees the option of working slightly longer days in exchange for a fully paid day off every three weeks. Many of our positions are represented by the BC Government and Service Employees' Union. Follow the link to read the range of benefits included in the Collective Agreements.

Leadership and Learning
Our work environment reflects the organization’s commitment to learning and growth, evidenced by the ready availability of resources and tools to allow people to grow professionally and personally. Our people benefit from formal course work towards degrees, certificates and designations, professional development workshops, conference sand seminars, manager coaches and more!

Great managers make great employment experiences for all staff. Through its formal 10-month leadership program and ongoing development, BC Housing entrenches its outcomes-based management philosophy. The course offers personal assessment tools, private coaching and full-day workshops aligned with organizational objectives. Professional development focuses on strategic thinking, project management, team development as well as mentoring and coaching.

Rewards and recognition
We appreciate the amazing effort that our people bring to each day’s work at BC Housing. We also know that to keep doing a great job, all of our people need health, wellness, family, friends and a well-balanced life on top of meaningful work. Our Rewards and Recognition programs reward great effort, long service, environmental awareness, good ideas, and positive change. Rewards points can be earned and redeemed in a wide variety of ways and programs. They can be saved up for something big or spent as they are earned.

Health and Safety
BC Housing puts the health and safety of its employees first – evidenced by the many awards bestowed upon us by the North American Occupational Safety and Health Association. In fact, we accepted the top honour in the Crown corporation category in 2010-2011. We continue to look for ways to enhance both the health and safety programs as well as the way in which we educate staff about how to stay safe. Over the years we have broadened our definition of health to include general physical, mental and emotional wellness. At regular “lunch and learns”, external experts are invited to address staff about topical health issues, to help us make better lifestyle choices.

Communication
The health of the organization is as dependent on getting information FROM our people as it is on delivering information TO our people. We conduct an annual employee survey on what works and what could be improved about the working environment at BC Housing. Our Semi-Annual Meetings (SAM) see more than 100 staff members from across the organization come together to do a little learning and a little sharing about our corporate goals and objectives, and how best to achieve them. We also conduct onboarding interviews, exit interviews, focus groups and mini-surveys - drawing on the organization’s expertise to ensure we hit the mark.

Balance
We know that to best serve others, we must find our own work-life balance. At BC Housing, we have the opportunity to ensure our own healthy future, and to balance our dedication to work with our family, friendships, wellness, and community. By taking advantage of our employee programs, the people at BC Housing are supported in their efforts to get fit and minimize health risks with our Wellness program , contribute to the greening of BC with livegreen , have social time with their co-workers, and bring the values we use on the job to their own neighbourhood through Community Connections.
