STEP to Work program increases Sean’s confidence

Sean’s main goal in taking BC Housing’s STEP to Work program was to gain experience working with people and to acquire valuable communication skills. He learned all that and much more.

“My job placement was with a Zellers in Surrey where I tidied up, folding clothes, and helping out customers,” remembered Sean. “It greatly increased my confidence; I’m much more outgoing now and find it much easier to talk with people.”

Based on his excellent work, 16-year-old Sean was offered a continuing position following his summer job placement. Sean declined in order to focus more on his studies.

“I had been thinking about dropping out, but STEP was one of the factors that convinced me to keep going. I’m in a new program at school and am much more involved with my studies now.”

While Sean’s immediate focus is on finishing high school, he hopes to continue on with his education.

“It’s one of my dreams to be a doctor,” he said. “I’m really going to try to work in the medical field.”
