Awards of Excellence and Recognition
BC Housing understands the urgency about climate change and its
impacts both locally and globally and the need to reverse this
trend. The
livegreen Housing Sustainability Plan:
2012/13 outlines our approach to
sustainability and importance of reducing green house gas emissions
through integrating social, environmental and economical
considerations in the work we do. As with all of our programs and
initiatives, we know that it is only through collaboration that we
can create a more sustainable future. We are proud of the awards
and recognition we have received and are committed to building a
sustainable future. We also thank our partners in the non-profit
and private sectors without whom these projects would not have been
possible.

Best Affordable
Housing Project - Enderby Memorial Terrace, Enderby
2012 CHBA Central Interior Keystone Awards |
||
|
|
||
|
Enderby Memorial Terrace in Enderby B.C. provides 15
apartments for seniors and people with disabilities is the
recipient of the Best Affordable Housing Project award at
this year’s Keystone Awards.
It is the last affordable housing development to open
under the Olympic Legacy Affordable Housing initiative,
which took temporary modular homes used to house athletes
during the 2010 Winter Games and reconfigured them to
create affordable housing in communities across British
Columbia.
Modular housing has been used extensively for affordable
housing developments as it allows construction to take
place in a factory, which means less dependence on weather
conditions. The modular units meet EnerGuide 80 standards
and are designed to be easily accessible for seniors and
people with disabilities – this includes room
sizes that allow for wheelchair access and manoeuvring,
shelves and light switches at an accessible height and
bathroom grab bars or step-in showers. The development is
operated by the Enderby Seniors Housing Society.

Canadian Green
Building Award – Karis Place, Vancouver
2012 Sustainable Architecture & Building Magazine Awards |
||
|
|
||
|
The Sustainable Architecture & Building Magazine
Awards, Canadian Green Building Awards recognize excellence
in the design and building of residential and
non-residential buildings of all types. Fifty-six projects
from across Canada were submitted to the 2012 Canadian
Green Building Awards from which the jury selected seven
winners including Karis Place in Vancouver. Operated by
More Than A Roof Housing, Karis Place provides 90
apartments for people at risk of homelessness and 15
apartments for seniors and people with disabilities.
Jury Comment: A difficult program and a modest budget
made the pursuit of meaningful sustainability goals
particularly challenging…The solution
successfully integrates the architecture with the
environmental performance ambitions through careful
envelope design and a variety of passive strategies. As
such it provides an example, not just to other
publicly-funded housing projects, but to market
condominium developments as well.
